Sokhela coal is a mining company that focuses on coal in KZN and Mpumalanga, trading anthracite and bituminous coal.
Through our subsidiaries (Owethu Mining and Exploration)in 2018 we acquired a mine (Schapkoopje, Vryheid, KZN) and that’s where we built healthy relationships within the mining industry that have lasted years. This resulted in us employing 100 people.
We currently mining anthracite in KZN on a joint venture basis with two different companies, through this partnership we are mining, tolling and selling to our clients.
The mine has 14,6 million tons on phase 1 over 900 ha depending on the stripping ratio, approximately 1,6 to 3,0 M is opencast, remainder is underground and remaining 15,000 ha estimated at 135 million tons.
In 2023 we entered into a new agreement with Sidinani Mining to procure, wash and market 20 million tons of coal anthracite over a period of 10 years.
We currently supplying steel, cement manufacturers in Zambia, Brazil, Ukraine, Europe, Chrome and
Manganese smelters in South Africa.
On the Mpumalanga operation we have an off take agreement to buy and sell their bituminous/
steam coal to any client of our choice.
